Here’s how the three-card pull works:

  • First Card: Reflects on lessons from the past and what you’re taking stock in.

  • Second Card: Focuses on what you’re cultivating in the present.

  • Third Card: Represents the outcome of aligning past and present energies. Past + present = the outcome.

About the Cards

Willingness

Willingness requires us to expand our comfort zone. Your comfort zone is safe, but it’s not where growth happens. Imagine a 3-ring target: the center is your comfort zone, the next ring is your learning zone, and the outer ring is your danger zone. Growth happens in the learning zone. It’s important to take small, manageable steps here, allowing gradual expansion that doesn’t push you into the danger zone. Too much all at once can cause us to retreat and never leave our comfort zone again. We grow by willingly and consistently easing into the learning zone. We become more curious, loving, adventurous, strong, and courageous. And our fear for others begins to dissipate.

Practice: Look for ways to expand yourself. Approach conflict, for example, with a sense of understanding and awareness. When you notice resistance in your thoughts or actions, pause and consider a new perspective. Instead of reacting in the same way to old issues, soften where you feel the need to be right. Meet resistance with flexibility and strength. Be willing to be wrong, and seek connection with those you disagree with.

Affirmation: I’m willing to face my insecurities with compassion and understanding.

Breathe in: I am breathing in patience.

Breathe out: I am breathing out tolerance.

Joy

Joy is a state of happiness rooted in inner peace. It comes from being connected to something larger than yourself. When we feel joy, we feel gratitude. But we have to be open to experience joy. When we’re closed off to the world, we’re closed off to joy. This is where willingness comes in—being willing to have new experiences. Being willing to expand outside our comfort zone. By practicing willingness first, you’ll feel yourself open up to joy.

Practice: Look for joy in the everyday. Notice the thoughts, actions, and moments that spark it. Slow down, pause, and reflect. See the world through the eyes of your heart. Feel your breath moving through your body and your feet grounding you to the earth. Open your inner doors and windows, and let yourself reflect on the nature of things.

Affirmation: Today, I’ll discover moments of joy.

Breathe in: I am breathing in joy.

Breathe out: I am breathing out my radiance in all directions.

Compassion

Compassion is the ability to understand and share in another’s suffering. The more you acknowledge your own pain, the more ease you’ll find with others’ discomfort. This allows you to witness their struggles without shutting them down or rushing to fix them. Compassion is presence: sitting with suffering, recognizing it, and allowing light to emerge from darkness. When one of us falls, we all stumble. We’re all interconnected, one organism relying on one another for survival. And when we recognize our own light, it helps us all shine brighter.

Practice: Consider this from the Tao Te Ching, translated by Stephen Mitchell: “Compassionate toward yourself, you reconcile all beings in the world.” Recognize the ways you create suffering in your own life. Sit with what you discover. Build your awareness of it and empathy toward it. As you do this, you’ll grow your compassion for yourself and others.

Affirmation: May all beings be free from pain and suffering. May I be at peace with what comes my way.

Breathe in: Breathing in, I acknowledge my suffering.

Breathe out: I am breathing out the antidote to my suffering.

These breathing exercises are inspired by the late Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh.
